Not coming to a television near you

June 25, 2009

Free Gaza and the Spirit of Humanity will sail the 240 miles from Cyprus to a Gaza fishing port with 36 solidarity activists from 16 countries aboard. It is carrying tonnes of cement and suitcases full of toys, crayons and colouring books for children – items which are all banned by Tel Aviv.’ (Photo from current.com.)

Image...Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board, Kafka wrote. And Kafka is apropos of a discussion about which intifada makes it into the U.S. news cycle. You will not hear about Free Gaza’s eighth voyage to deliver banned items to Gaza. You will not hear about the Israeli navy’s repeated attacks on the boat (the group’s Official Notification of Intent to Enter states that ‘vessels will be flying the Greek flags, and, as such, fall under the jurisdiction Greece […] without entering or nearing Israeli territorial waters’). You will not see their faces on CNN, nor will you see the lives of the Palestinians they intend to reach. You will not hear Gaza experts trotted out to make sense of Gaza or the group’s activism. You will not hear the word ‘freedom’ invoked as a Palestinian desire. You will not hear the word ‘solidarity’ invoked about the boat action. You will not hear the passengers hailed by Obama as ‘courageous.’
