Ronald Takaki: In gratitude.

June 2, 2009

I didn’t know Professor Takaki personally, but he left a strong impression with his engagement with students at Berkeley. His energy transferred to students who fought several years for keeping ethnic studies alive as a department. He was one of the most vocal faculty members on campus during the early phases of GWOT, when the U.S. was gearing for its attack on Afghanistan. Prof. Takaki (along with Professor June Jordan, who spoke eloquently at anti-war demonstrations all while battling her illness) made fearlessness in academia seem possible. So long, Ron, and thanks.
