National development by the numbers

May 26, 2009

The United Nation Human Development Report is released. Noteably ranked: Iceland is first and Sierra Leone is last at #179. The U.S. is #15. Israel is #24; the oPt is #106. Brazil is #70; China is #94. The U.A.E. is #31; Iran is #84. It’s easy to throw them out like that, because they become abstracted derivatives. The concept of development pulls a cloak over all other factors. Why else would Iceland be #1 when its economy just got obliterated, while China is handing out loans in the billions? Then again, there seems to be a sort of trend toward the domination of cold, hard numbers, that is, generated data over scientific method/analysis.
