Techie pronounces HD death, calls for optimism

April 30, 2009

The global meltdown and swine flu have conspired to kill my hard drive, whose crash last week curiously coincided with natural and man-made international disasters. There are only two Mac-authorized dealers in Rio de Janeiro, one of which is in walking distance from my house. For around US$225 the technician can replace the old sluggish 60gb HD with a shiny new 160gb one. The catch: I stand to lose all my software if his ´mirroring´ technique fails (I think this is like cloning the old HD, i.e. Dolly the Sheep for your harddrive). When I asked him what he thought of all this uncertainty, he replied, ´We have to be hopeful about these things.´

better than mine…my motherboard died so that was it for that comp.
and the next windows laptop i got here summarily started freezing in 2 months, and is being “repaired” for the last 2 weeks.

I think it would be more accurate to call the swine-flu man made as well.

Yes yes – duly redacted. Man-made as all hell.
