The neighbors thought the new wall in Buenos Aires was a good way to keep out thieves. As in Palestine, as in East Berlin, as in Brazil, as in Argentina: walls anywhere are erected with the same stupid confidence everywhere. The residents aren’t fooled by Newspeak phrases like ‘social separation wall’ and are calling it ‘The Wall of Discord.’ ‘The social conflict between wealthy and poor districts, which sometimes exist cheek by jowl, is a familiar story in South America, but has been exacerbated recently by high food prices and economic meltdown.’
